Outer Banks Wine University is where wine knowledge and fun come together. Take a break from the beach in the comfy classroom to sip wine and untangle wine’s mysteries – minus the snobbery. NO white tablecloths. NO wine glasses bigger than your head. They make wine approachable and fun for everyone. It is just grape juice after all.
Professor Chip Sellarole has been in the wine business for 25 years. Chip strips the snobbery out of the whole wine scene and explains it in a way that anyone can understand. Chip started in the wine business in the mid-1980s and in the intervening years, has become a database of information on wine history, wineries and wine varieties. His classes are fun, relaxed and informative, providing even the most sophisticated Outer Banks wine drinker with new tidbits of knowledge while welcoming the novice with a style that never intimidates. There are a minimum of two classes each week and recent classes have included:
Wine Tasting 101 – Untangling The Vines. With five wines as well as cheese & crackers and gourmet chocolates to sample different pairings and cleanse your palette. Demystify the wine buying process, decode a wine label, map your palate, taste and pair wine with food. Wine doesn't have to be scary. This is a fun, snob free lesson that gives you the real skinny -- and dispels some of the common myths about wine.
Savoring Sake: The Basics includes five sakes with bottles ranging from $8-$65 and sushi to appreciate the food pairings. Sake is hot right now, but did you know most sakes are made to drink cold? Learn how sake is made, its history, how to serve it and the basics of pairing sake with food. Very limited seating.
That Temperamental Pinot Noir with five pinots as well as cheese & crackers and chocolate to sample pairings and cleanse the palette. Explore the strengths and weaknesses of this finicky grape and the glories of pairing it with chocolate.
Private Classes are available, treat your group to a private wine class at Outer Banks Wine University. This is an Outer Bank activity unlike any other. Choose a theme from our portfolio of classes or make a special request. We’ll make sure you learn something and have fun in the process. This is one school where you'll look forward to doing your homework!
