North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island Summary
Planning a visit to the North Carolina Aquarium? Over 1 million people visit the NC Aquariums each year, and there’s much to see and do. The Aquarium includes indoor and outdoor exhibits, auditorium, classrooms, meeting rooms, and a gift shop. In addition, there are daily programs featuring live animals, marine life videos and special activities Most visitors can tour the aquarium in about two hours. However, if you plan to participate in aquarium programs, search for relics in the Fossil Hunt, or visit the gift shop, allow more time. All entrances, exits, restrooms and exhibits are wheelchair accessible.
School-age youngsters make up a large part of aquarium visitors – as many as 18,000 to 20,000 each year. Most visit between March and May. The Aquarium asks that groups register at least two weeks in advance. This allows the Aquarium to schedule group visits in a timely manner so students have a more enjoyable experience. In addition, calling ahead provides a better opportunity to take advantage of a number of school group activity options. With prior notice, a special marine life video, live animal program, field trip experience or other activity may be arranged.
Groups can book an aquarium visit for any time of year, however, the Aquarium begins booking spring school group visits in January. In order to help provide a more rewarding experience, visits are scheduled between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. North Carolina school groups that register in advance are admitted free. Non-registered groups can be charged the standard admission rate. If the building is filled to capacity, a non-registered “drop-in” group may be asked to wait outside until more space is available.
If your school group can’t get to the Aquarium, the Aquarium can come to you through its Outreach Program, complete with live animals and a variety of topics and activities. Daily programs include marine life videos, live animal programs, audience participation games, demonstrations and more. Live animal programs in the Aquarium auditorium may feature alligators, sea turtles or snakes. Fish in selected tanks are fed daily.
