Quiet little Waves is tightly sandwiched between Rodanthe and Salvo and is the hub of the tri-village area because it is the home of the post office.
Locals from all three villages gather there to talk about the weather and the fishing. In the 1930s Waves was known as South Rodanthe, but in 1939 the postal service gave the town a post office and a new name all its own. Predominantly residential, Waves is a traditional fishing village where old-timers and newcomers enjoy a peaceful life most of the year. Now, of course, it is also host to vacationers, as is evident in the numerous rental cottages dotting the oceanfront. Two oceanfront campgrounds, one of them very large and filled with amenities, are located in the community. Besides a couple of great restaurants and some watersports places, Waves doesn't have a lot in the way of commercial offerings, but busy Rodanthe is so close by it makes no difference.
