Swansboro & Cape Carteret, are thriving coastal towns today, they retain the idyllic flavor of a quieter era in its waterfront and shopping districts. An eighteenth century port town, Swansboro became known far and wide as a center for shipbuilding. By the nineteenth century, this reputation was upheld when Swansboro became the site of the first steamboat built in North Carolina, created by famed boat builder Captain Otway Burns.
