Development of the community was planned by local artist and visionary Frank Stick who purchased the entire tract of land in the 1940s. Stick and his son David helped turn the community into a harmonious marriage with nature. Canals and water paths abound, as do many species of birds and wildlife. You feel as if you are inside one of the artist's canvases. Consisting of only 4 square miles of land, the town includes 2 private marinas, a golf course, sound side picnic & bathing areas, and plenty of beach accesses. The town has a very active civic association which acts much like a parks and recreation department. Southern Shores is known as the Town of Volunteers and many of the residents participate in maintenance and beautification projects. Even the Town Council members are unpaid. A perfect place for a restful retreat, this seaside community welcomes families and friends alike. A great coffee shop and several quaint restaurants keep you in the neighborhood and a nearby grocer can supply you with all your stay-home needs. Close proximity to both the ocean and the sound provides grounds for relaxing strolls or vigorous swims, amazing sunrises and serene sunsets. Most of the Southern Shores rental cottages are on the ocean side of the community with residents living mostly on the sound side of town. If you are looking to rent a Southern Shores beach cottage or one of the many palatial oceanfront homes, just browse our listings in the Lodging section. This section includes Southern Shores cottages from three or four bedrooms to more than ten, each is individually listed with a helpful check availability link so that you can easily plan your stay. Our complete Property Management listings will further assist you in finding the right Southern Shores accommodations to suit your family's needs. Perhaps you are looking for more short-term rentals or even nightly accommodations, you can check within the information provided for each cottage to help you locate homes that allow partial week rentals, these will primarily be available in the off and shoulder seasons. There are currently no Southern Shores Hotels or Southern Shores Motels available in this community and most of the cottages are not available for in-season short-term Outer Banks vacations

There are several choices of dining, from family style restaurants, to sandwiches and pizza, to quaint cozy cafés that offer fine dining options; the choices allow you to indulge your culinary side. Go ahead, sample something new, after all, you are on vacation.
Once you have had your fill of flounder, shrimp, scallops and crabs, perhaps its time to think of your friends back home. Outer Banks and Southern Shores NC souvenirs, gifts and all the necessities are readily available locally. Peruse the Shopping section to discover the best boutiques Southern Shores has to offer. Jewelry, fine gifts and swimwear are just the tip of the iceberg. You'll also find places to buy vacation necessities. Several vacation-oriented businesses have sprouted up in Southern Shores to support the many visitors, Southern Shores shopping options are generally upscale. Southern Shores shopping choices are limited to two shopping centers with specialty shops but some of the nearby “big box” stores can provide just about anything else you may need; there are several choices of stores to search and explore. Peruse the Shopping Section to discover clothing boutiques, specialty shops and a few souvenir stores. Don't forget to look for and print out the many coupons on this site and be sure to take them with you to the local merchants for discounts on all your purchases. When you have done it all and seen it all, just head back to the beach, sink into the sand, and relax… or perhaps you are ready for something more to do.
Our Southern Shores Activities section while fairly limited, does offer some fun things to do for the whole family. Take the whole gang down to the beach or rent a kayak and tour the Currituck Sound or the local canals. There is a semi-private golf course in Southern Shores. However most of the activities for the family you will find nearby in Duck or south on Highway 158 in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. Surf fishing is great on the shoreline, and inshore and off shore fishing charters are readily available.
Nearby Kitty Hawk is often confused as the place where the Wright brothers made the first powered flight. That actually happened just south in Kill Devil Hills, travel south along Highway 158 and you can't miss the high grassy knoll of Kill Devil hill looming over the town. The granite monument rising 61 feet atop the hill marks the spot where Wilbur and Orville Wright flew the first airplane in 1903. The 314-acre national park located here, called The Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, honors the Wright Brothers first flight with a museum and an airstrip and many historic markers telling the complete story of mans first, powered flight. Air tours of the Outer Banks are offered at the airstrip and are one of many great Outer Banks activities for the family, not to mention a fascinating way to see how narrow our peninsula really is.
Just south of Kill Devil Hills, in Nags Head, is the home of Jockey's Ridge State Park, the home of the East Coast's tallest sand dune at around 100 feet. Jockeys Ridge is the perfect place to roll down a hill with wild abandon, fly a kite, hang glide, watch the sunset, explore nature trails or take a sound side dip in the Albemarle Sound.
Continuing south into Nags Head on Highway 158 you will eventually cross the Nags Head Causeway where you will find the largest Outer Banks public boat ramp, and continuing onto Roanoke Island where there are three more marinas (Pirates Cove Marina, Broad Creek Marina & Thicket Lump Marina) for charter boats. Just south of Nags Head on Highway 12 is the Bodie Island Lighthouse and Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, an additional departure point for world-class, deep-sea charter fishing.
