The North Carolina Aquarium, located in Pine Knoll Shores, has currently begun its ambitious and much anticipated $24 million dollar expansion program. The building is currently closed for construction through spring 2006. Programming continues, however, through its off-site office, located in Atlantic Beach at the Atlantic Station Shopping Center. Field trips and programming such as Gyotaku, known as fish printing, offer interactive and hands-on education opportunities throughout the season. Advance registration is required to participate in these events, so call the Aquarium’s Visitor Services office for more information.
The Aquarium itself is located in the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, set aside for environmental preservation, and donated to the state of North Carolina by the Roosevelt family. The 265- acre preserve, an excellent location for observing wildlife, especially birds, includes acres of valuable and increasingly rare maritime forest. This Natural Area includes a half-mile self-guiding nature trail, and is open to the public.
Pine Knoll Shores itself, a year-round residential community, welcomes visitors with many lodging options in the form of hotels, rental cottages and condominiums.
