Ocracoke Island is accessible only via ferry, private boat or airplane. Time seems to stand still on this 16-mile-long island, and that little bit of escapism is what lures people back again and again. What really makes Ocracoke Island special is that three-quarters of it is protected Cape Hatteras National Seashore property.

For 12 continuous miles, the island's dunes and marshlands are untouched, providing a home for deer, birds, muskrats, rabbits and even wild ponies. The beaches at Ocracoke are some of the last pristine beaches left in America. Anglers are allowed to drive on the beach, and the surf fishing is great.
The name of the island probably stems from the Woccon Indians who lived here when the English explored the area in the late 1500s. Early maps call the place Wokokon, then Wococock, then Occacock and so on until it became Ocracoke. A traditional fishing village dating back to 1715, Ocracoke Village now thrives on the tourist industry, but in a very tasteful and unpretentious way. It's busy with tourists almost nine months of the year, though that never stops anyone from going. The off-season is dreamy and romantic. The village is centered around Silver Lake, a berth for fishing vessels and sailboats. There is much to see in Ocracoke Village, and it can all be seen on foot or on bicycle. Walk along the back roads and you'll feel history seeping into your skin. Old cottages, a British cemetery, the Ocracoke lighthouse, shops, galleries, a pirate museum and a village museum, and casual eateries will help you while away an afternoon.
