Morehead City offers something for all travelers, and will reward time spent with plenty to do and see. Water clings close to the city on three sides. The Bogue Sound sits to the south of the city, while the Newport River curls around the city from the north. Water transport made this city an important port city since its beginning, and today the importance remains the same. At the mouth of the Newport River, the Bogue Sound, and the colorfully named Calico Bay, the North Carolina Port Authority, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Navy docks do daily business. The Intracoastal Waterway passes through the Newport River, brushing by Morehead City at the entrance of the river and the sound, and then passes along the city’s full waterfront length as the Waterway makes its way west.

The city’s docks, as might be imagined, are vital in this watery city. Historic buildings cluster from the dock’s edges, and punctuate streets meandering inland. Historic restaurants perch right on the waterfront, having secured the location as vital to the freshness of their wares. The Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant has been known as a Morehead City landmark since it first opened its doors in 1938. This restaurant and others offer fresh, wonderful North Carolina seafood to hungry diners. Let TheCoastalExplorer.com stretch your vacation dollar; check our Coupon section for the latest money-saving options, and print out coupons for local vendors.
The Morehead City community joins with over 100,000 visitors yearly to celebrate the importance of the sea in the 19-year-old North Carolina Seafood Festival, held the first full weekend of every October. Seafood prepared every imaginable way is available for tasting throughout the Festival, beginning with the “Chowder Cook-Off” Friday night. Artisans and seafood vendors create a shopping mecca of over 150 booths, while many crafters perform educational demonstrations. Live music and other entertainment heighten the festivities. Sunday brings the emotional highlight of the Festival, with the “Blessing of the Fleet”, as the commercial fishing community is acknowledged and thanked.
Visitors to Morehead City at any time of the year will find something to pique their curiosity. History buffs can make a beeline for The History Place. Permanent displays give visitors educational opportunities year-round. Walk through full-scale exhibits of environments of Carteret County’s past, such as an old general store, doctor’s office, and old school room. The Jack Spenser Research Library, housed within the facility, makes significant research possible, and is a destination of choice for many people. Lectures and programs are scheduled throughout the year at the facility’s auditorium and classrooms, which can be rented for special events. A bookstore and museum shop tempt shoppers to browse, and a tea room on site provides refreshment.
The coastal landscape surrounding the city is rich with natural beauty, and much of it has been appropriately set aside for preservation and public use. Two public beaches and a marina are located on Radio Island, to the east of the city, in the mouth of the Newport River, and can be reached from Morehead City by bridge. Just beyond this island on the east side of the river lies the Rachel Carson Reserve and Carrot Island. Rachel Carson, author of the 1961 classic, “Silent Spring”, is known as the mother of the environmentalist movement. The reserve, named in honor of her, now shelters native animals and plants as it preserved North Carolina’s unique coastal environment. Duke University research labs, located near the reserve, help in this mission.
Outdoor activities abound with opportunities for golfing, horseback riding, and plenty of space for biking and walking. For a more watery connection, take a harbor tour by boat and enjoy the city from the water’s surface. Or get under the water’s surface! Morehead City is proud to be known as a premier location for diving on the east coast, and hosts nationally recognized dive instructors and operators. Sport divers can check out a variety of underwater sites offering coral-covered wrecks, warm waters, and fish galore. Check our Coastal Activities section for a full range of exciting items for your to-do list.
Back on dry land Morehead City visitors will find plenty to eat and many interesting places to shop. Antique shops cluster in Morehead, and in the surrounding area; there are well over a dozen antique dealers, so antique lovers would be well advised to come prepared to find the buy of a lifetime! Restaurants in the area give a place to stop, pause and refresh. Choices run the full gamut from bagels to pizza to Mexican food, or check menus from a steakhouse, bar
