No one is quite sure exactly where the name Kitty Hawk originated. Some say it derived from killy honk, an Indian term for the goose-hunting season. A far-fetched theory is that it is a derivation from skeeter hawk, the local term for mosquito hawks. At any rate, the name has been used on maps since the mid-1700s.  Kitty Hawk has a large population of year-round residents, many of whom live on the sound side in Kitty Hawk village. One look, though, and you know this is predominantly a vacation destination. A maritime forest, golf course, fishing pier, campground and mini-golf course make for great fun.  Let TheCoastalExplorer.com be your guide to your Kitty Hawk travel planning, we live here on the OBX, we know.

Kitty Hawk is often confused as the place where the Wright brothers made the first powered flight. That actually happened just south in Kill Devil Hills, but the Wright brothers did stay with the Tate family in Kitty Hawk village on several occasions and their letters home were postmarked with the town's name. Travel south along Highway 158 and you will find Kill Devil Hills, you can't miss the high grassy knoll of Kill Devil hill looming over the town. The granite monument rising 61 feet atop the hill marks the spot where Wilbur and Orville Wright flew the first airplane in 1903.  The 314-acre national park located here, called The Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, honors the Wright Brothers first flight with a museum and an airstrip and many historic markers telling the complete story of mans first, powered flight. Air tours of the Outer Banks are offered at the airstrip and are one of many great Outer Banks activities for the family, not to mention a fascinating way to see how narrow our peninsula really is.
Just south of Kill Devil Hills, in Nags Head, is the home of Jockey's Ridge State Park, the home of the East Coast's tallest sand dune at around 100 feet. Jockeys Ridge is the perfect place to roll down a hill with wild abandon, fly a kite, hang glide, watch the sunset, explore nature trails or take a sound side dip in the Albemarle Sound.
Continuing south into Nags Head on Highway 158 you will eventually cross the Nags Head Causeway where you will find the largest Outer Banks public boat ramp, and continuing onto Roanoke Island where there are three more marinas (Pirates Cove Marina, Broad Creek Marina & Thicket Lump Marina) for charter boats.  Just south of Nags Head on Highway 12 is the Bodie Island Lighthouse and Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, an additional departure point for world-class, deep-sea charter fishing.
You can find great information on these community attractions in our Outer Banks Community Section along with free activities and other areas of interest.  In our Kitty Hawk Community Section you can find Kitty Hawk Town Government information, including the Kitty Hawk Police Department, the Kitty Hawk Fire Department and Kitty Hawk Ocean Rescue.  We detail each Kitty Hawk beach access (6), each Kitty Hawk park (1) and each Kitty Hawk boat ramp (1) as well, so that you can make the most of your visit to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
