Centrally located Kill Devil Hills is the largest town on the Outer Banks in terms of population it is bracketed by Kitty Hawk to the north and Nags Head to the south. Despite the large resident population, the locals are far outnumbered by summer visitors in this centralized vacation town. The town of Kill Devil Hills is named for the large sand dune named Kill Devil hill, which currently serves as the location of the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Continuing south into Nags Head on Highway 158 you will eventually cross the Nags Head Causeway where you will find the largest Outer Banks public boat ramp, and continuing onto Roanoke Island where there are three more marinas (Pirates Cove Marina, Broad Creek Marina & Thicket Lump Marina) for charter boats. Just south of Nags Head on Highway 12 is the Bodie Island Lighthouse and Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, an additional departure point for world-class, deep-sea charter fishing.
Back in town you can’t miss the high grassy knoll of Kill Devil hill looming over the town. The granite monument rising 61 feet atop the hill marks the spot where Wilbur and Orville Wright flew the first airplane in 1903. The 314-acre national park located here, called The Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, honors the Wright Brothers first flight with a museum and an airstrip and many historic markers telling the complete story of mans first, powered flight. Air tours of the Outer Banks are offered at the airstrip and are one of many great activities for the family, not to mention a fascinating way to see how narrow the Outer Banks really are.
Behind Kill Devil Hills on the sound side, is Colington Island. A twisting ride down Colington Road reveals crabbers and fishermen at work along with spectacular sound views, a few campgrounds and restaurants and a popular go kart speedway course. Nags Head Woods maritime forest is also accessible in town. Nags Head Woods is a preserved maritime forest and provides a true respite when you've gotten too much sun.
