Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo
Roanoke Island Festival Park Summary
Roanoke Island Festival Park
Roanoke Island Festival Park is an interactive family attraction that celebrates the first English settlement in America. When the Jamestown colonists arrived in 1607 they were in many ways walking the footsteps of the Roanoke Island colonists of 1585 and 1587. Sir Walter Raleigh organized a series of voyages to explore and settle the “new world” from 1584-1587.
The centerpiece of the 25-acre island park adjacent to Manteo, North Carolina, is Elizabeth II, a representation of one of the seven English ships from the Roanoke Voyage of 1585. Costumed Elizabethan sailors greet visitors and help them experience sixteenth century seafaring life.
In addition to Elizabeth II, the park recreates the English settlement site with historical interpreters. The experience makes learning fun as visitors explore the camp and engage in hands-on activities such as blacksmithing, woodworking, games and more.
The Legend of Two-Path, is a touching 45-minute film on the Native American’s reaction to the arrival of the English on Roanoke Island. It was produced by the filmmaking school at North Carolina School of the Arts. This film is shown several times a day in the Film Theatre.
Roanoke Island Festival Park is also home to the Roanoke Adventure Museum exploring more than 400 years of Outer Banks history. Exhibitions go beyond the first English settlement to show the Outer Banks’ vibrant legacy of boat building, shipwrecks, pirates, lighthouses, the Freedman’s Colony, the Civil War and maritime commerce.
In the summer, Roanoke Island Festival Park provides the backdrop for the North Carolina School of the Arts Summer Performance Festival where drama, dance and musical performances are held daily. Additional performances are scheduled throughout the year. For more information, visit roanokeisland.com or call 252-475-1500.
